Silver Linings community crisis response program
Sometimes in life, people are faced with a situation without an obvious solution – floods, tornadoes, fires, civil unrest, earthquakes, terrorist attacks or war, school closings, acts of violence or death, and other tragic circumstances beyond our control. When this happens, we become highly sensitive and can experience many emotions that we may not realize we are capable of feeling.
Silver Linings is a community support program for counselors, volunteers, churches, and relief organizations needing additional tools to assist youth experiencing emotional turmoil due to loss/change. Children ages 5-8 and 9-13, as well as teens, are able to share their feelings and thoughts about these changes with others their own age.
Silver Linings has been proven successful in classrooms, community centers, and short term rescue shelters after 9/11, during the aftermath of weather related disasters, in areas of civil unrest, and when counselors are called to assist youth when violence and other tragedies occur.
This resource is ideal for agencies and organizations who assist children and families during community crisis events.
Silver Linings community crisis response program is an important tool.
Provides emotional strength to our youth when their lives are changing due to outside influences. This program includes:
- Instructor manuals that work in tandem with reproducible Participant Booklets in three separate editions developed for ages 5-8, 9-13, and adolescents.
- Each edition includes six sessions in a user-friendly format to assist educators and youth caregivers as they lead children and teens to understanding and hope concerning their own crisis event.
- A colouring storybook entitled Ferdinand the Eagle focuses on rebuilding and generating hope.
- Options for developing expandable “large group” displays where children can post drawings and other creative elements depicting what they have experienced.
We were close to ground zero and used Silver Linings to help the families in our community. The feedback from the parents was wonderful. The children were more open at home and at ease talking about their feelings.Working with the materials, I personally think it is an excellent program.

Silver Linings was user friendly. Children and teachers/counselors enjoyed using it. Children were engaged in the participants’ pages and had a lot to share. Working with Silver Linings seemed to normalize the reality of their loss.
